The main aims are to: Improve access to furniture and appliances to those on low incomes, provide work-based training opportunities to improve employment prospects, reduce the amount of items going to land-fill, provide services that our community needs and make a difference. The WDT addresses the need for recycling and supports people to help each other. Collects furniture to assist with the housing of homeless families and gives support to unemployed and low-paid people in East Cheshire and South Manchester. The Trust exports furniture to Eastern Europe and Africa. Salvation Army Ellesmere Port Collects and supplies second-hand donated furniture at affordable prices to disadvantaged people in Ellesmere Port and Neston. Also provides furniture free of charge to families in need via official bodies such as the Council Housing Dept., the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Social Services. The Furniture Mine, through a variety of methods, re-distributes good quality furniture from those who have and no longer need it to those who need it but don’t have it in North Staffordshire and East Cheshire. Operating in Manchester and North East Cheshire, the project’s aim is to work in partnership with others to provide furniture and other household items at the lowest prices to those in need, to further relieve poverty by providing jobs, volunteering and training opportunities, and to re-cycle and re-use as much of the material received as possible. The Blacon Furniture Project, part of the Blacon Community Trust, aims to provide affordable second-hand furniture and other household items to local residents and low income families in the Chester area. It also helps in the re-use of these items by diverting them from landfill sites. Tree of Life Centre The Tree of Life Centre at Wythenshawe aims to reduce and overcome social, economic and health barriers experienced in our community by developing community service provision focused around health and well being. Furnaround operates in Macclesfield District supplying good second-hand furniture to local people free of charge. Most customers are referred by local social agencies, but people may self-refer. Christian Concern Crewe works in central and East Cheshire and collects, restores and redistributes items of furniture donated by folk who have no further need of it. These are then passed on to needy people in the community, referred by professionals from other services. At the same time, training opportunities and supported employment are offered to young people and adults who would otherwise be difficult to place, including some with special needs. The vision is to support the poor and marginalised in order to restore their self worth and encourage them to believe they can make a positive contribution to their community.
