| (Rotters is a Charitable organisation which grew out of meetings of the Community Environment Working Group of the Speke-Garston SRB Partnership. Through these meetings, interest was initially expressed in launching a kerbside collection of recyclable materials. This evolved into a proposal to concentrate on green waste (both garden and kitchen). After having to wait a year for new composting and kitchen waste regulations as a direct result of the Foot & Mouth outbreak in 2002, collections finally began in May 2004 in the Highbank estate area of Garston. Rotters now collects in 3 areas - Highbank, Long Lane area & the Vineyard estate. Collections are made weekly, either Mondays or Fridays. On the composting site there is a special in-vessel for the kitchen waste that reduces rodent contamination and leachate run-off, complies with ABPR regulations and provides suitable composting material to be added to the garden composting bays within 2 weeks. The final end-product is then sold back to the local residents at a reduced rate. Plans are currently underway to expand the project. |
