| Otter Rotters provides a fortnightly kerbside collection service for garden waste to residents located in or around the Otter river valley in East Devon. In order to have their waste collected, residents buy tags from local shops which are then left out with their bags on collection day. Various grades of the resulting compost are then available for sale. In addition to garden waste collections Otter Rotters undertake waste education work in local schools, run a network of ‘compost doctors’ who can provide expert advice on home composting and are about to launch a new timber recycling project. |

Furniture and Electrical Devon Furniture Forum Devon Furniture Forum provides a support and advocacy service to the furniture recycling and re-use organisations within the region. DFF acts as a consultative body to other agencies in the field and encourages the development of partnerships with local statutory and voluntary organisations and with the public sector. In April 2001 DFF opened a regional white goods refurbishment centre. Large quantities of used white goods are refurbished and then allocated to furniture re-use groups throughout Devon. Jigsaw Barnstable Jigsaw Barnstable is a furniture re-use and repair organisation, household reuse collections. Provides furniture and white goods for people who have been homeless, and have recently acquired accommodation.Volunteers working at the project learn a range of craft skills including woodwork, repairing and restoring furniture, warehousing, operating machinery, upholstery, etc. Plymouth Resettlement Agency is a unique service which has been set up to provide cheap furniture and essential household items for people making the transition from institutionalised care to independent living. Recycling in Ottery (RiO) is a community re-use and recycling centre, which takes recyclable materials and furniture, building salvage, books, clothes and household goods. It is co-operatively owned, not-for-profit and a limited company. MDCRL’s main activity is operating a kerbside collection of recyclable materials under a partnership agreement/contract with Mid Devon District Council. MDCRL also provides a business waste collection service and a schools wasteeducation programme. Paperchain Office paper recycling collections in Exeter and surrounding area. Paperchain also services 11 textile banks in Exeter, and runs a supported employment scheme for the shredding of cardboard into animal bedding. South Molton Recycle Ltd operates a kerbside collection for 50,000 homes, runs 80 recycling ‘pavilions’ in villages around Devon, and recycles materials from 2 civic amenity sites. South Molton Recycle also runs a furniture re-use centre and is involved with comunity composting initiatives.
Exeter Scrapstore The Scrapstore is a valuable recycling facility where members can purchase waste materials created by local manufacturing processes for creative arts projects. Recycle for Play Project Promotes children’s play. Services include toy library, recycling for play (Scrapstore) and play development. SPARC SPARC run a family-friendly Scrapstore, open to all, with clean non-toxic waste materials for use in play, available at a low cost to the public. Tavistock Scrapstore Tavistock Scrapstore collects materials from local businesses to use as a resource for children’s play. |
