| About 4% of household rubbish in the UK is disposable nappies and their contents. That’s over 1 million tonnes a year (over 8 million disposables a day are thrown away in the UK alone). This rate of nappy disposal is even higher in Bradford, which has one of the highest birth rates in Britain. The Bradford Real Nappy Project, run by Bradford Environmental Action Trust (BEAT) promotes the use of washable nappies to communities in the Bradford District. Using cotton nappies has a number of benefits
The team runs fun days to raise awareness of the environmental and personal benefits of using real nappies. They also engage with public agencies and health sector professionals to spread the word to new mothers and their partners about the range of washable nappy systems on the market and how best to use them. The Project has also helped a laundry service the Nappy Train - set up to provide collection, thorough washing and delivery of clean nappies to parents. |
