CONFERENCE BRINGS GLOBAL AND LOCAL PERSPECTIVES TO RECYCLING

The Community Recycling Network's 11th Annual Conference and exhibition will kick off with a panel discussion on Thursday night at Manchester Town Hall. The discussion, which is open to the general public, will focus on forming a clear way forward for sustainable waste management in Greater Manchester, involving the public, private and community sector. It will feature experts from the community sector, waste management companies and leading consultants from the field.

On Friday the CRN Conference will be geared towards local authorities with presentations from the community sector and local authority members. This will be a unique opportunity for local authorities to forge new partnerships with the community sector. The CRN will also be holding its first exhibition.

Nick Francis, the CRN's Director, says: "This is a chance to display innovative ideas which are not expensive. There will be cheap and practical improvements for kerbside and other recycling activities.

"It is important for local authorities to realise that throwing money at recycling equipment is not necessarily the most cost effective way to go."

Speakers from Australia, Greece and New Zealand will also be bringing an international perspective to the Conference.

Gerard Gillespie from Australia will tell the Conference about the success of Zero Waste policies in Australia and New Zealand and Florian Ermacora from the European Commission will tell delegates about the WEEE Directive and the European social economy. Matthew Pumphrey from Orrtec is also lined up to talk about lessons learnt from composting in the Antipodes, while Polina Gioka from The Ecological Recycling Society will make a presentation on community waste activity in Athens.

There will be more than 20 workshops ranging from management training for the sector to market development and waste exchanges.
