KERBSIDE RECYCLING COLLECTIONS HIT THE MAGIC MILLION

The member organisations of the Community Recycling Network (CRN) now carry out kerbside collections for more than one million households throughout the UK. This means that CRN is now the largest collector of separated household waste at the kerbside.

The latest figures released by the CRN show that 1,083,335 households have their recyclable waste collected each week by members of the not-for-profit community sector throughout the country. The figures obtained last year by the CRN showed that 760,546 households benefited from kerbside collections.

The figures refer to recyclable waste which is separated by the householder prior to collection from the kerbside. This results in the lowsults in the low contamination of recyclables.

"People want to recycle," says Andy Moore, the CRN's Co-ordinator. "People will take the extra trouble to do the right thing, to separate their waste. Passing the million household mark means we're getting something right in engaging the public and communities in taking responsibilty for their wastestream. It also means that collectively we're the largest single operator of householder-separated collections in the UK. This means about four per cent of households are participating, a small but significant statistic."
