WORLD OF WASTE MINIMISATION COMES TO LIVERPOOL

The Community Recycling Network (CRN) will be holding its 10th Annual Conference at the University of Liverpool on the 16-18th April 1999. The event, which will attract over 150 delegates from all corners of the country, will mark a decade of successful community based waste reduction and recycling in the UK.

The Conference boasts an impressive list of speakers. Paul Relis, Executive Vice President of CR&R, one of the major recycling gurus in the United States and Olivier Legadec, Assistant Director of Envie in France, on which CREATE in Liverpool is modelled, will give an overview of sustainable waste management in their countries. Louise Ellman, MP for Liverpool Riverside and member of The Environment, Transport and Regional Affairs Select Committee and George Pflug of Triodos Bank will also be speaking.

The CRN Conference, which will act as the largest forum for best practice in community recycling in the UK will offer over 20 workshops ranging from retail recycling to job creation through intermediate labour markets. The event, which is sponsored by UK Waste, will also host a public debate on incineration with energy recovery at Liverpool Town Hall. The debate, "The Burning Issue", will be chaired by Liverpool Councillor Richard Kemp and feature Bill Prescott of Onyx Environmental Group and Keith Collins from the London Recycling Consortium.

Notes to the editor:

The Community Recycling Network is a national umbrella organisation representing over 250 community recycling and waste management projects throughout the UK.

CRN member organisations collectively provide recycling services to over 4.5 million people, 11,500 businesses and 2,000 schools and colleges. Members include local authority kerbside subcontractors, community composting schemes, collectors of commercial waste paper, scrapstores, furniture recyclers and waste minimisation and re-use projects.
