GOVERNMENT URGED TO GIVE MORE MONEY TO THE CINDERELLAS OF RECYCLING

The Community Recycling Network has given a cautious welcome to the new pots of cash announced in DEFRA's response to the Strategy Unit report.

The separate funding programmes will give a much needed boost to efforts to increase recycling in this country but CRN warns that more detailed information needs to be forthcoming from the Government.

"We welcome the intention to provide more funding though, as always, the devil is in the detail. We look forward to seeing how the money is divvied up," says Andy Moore, CRN's coordinator.

"We hope that this translates into tangible assistance for the expertise development and service which our sector - so often the Cinderella of recycling - is becoming more and more successful in delivering.

"We also welcome the fact that DEFRA is prioritising the householder - who, after all, is the principal actor by which recovery of materials from domestic waste can be made meaningful.

" DEFRA's response highlights the need for recycling to be carried out in the context of a strong partnership with industry - that industry includes the community recycling sector.
