March 10, 2003 CRN/AN/PR37 To be released immediately
Michael Meacher, the minister for the environment, will be making the key address at the Community Recycling Network's (CRN) 14th Annual Conference this spring.
"We're delighted that the minister is able to be with us," says Andy Moore, CRN's coordinator. "We know him to be a committed recycling enthusiast just like us and his input and presence will be more than welcome."
Mr Meacher's speech at the CRN annual conference follows last year's successful appearance by the Rt Hon Margaret Beckett when she stressed the importance of local authorities and the community sector working together to achieve the overall objectives of the government's waste strategy.
The CRN conference - held this year at the Adelphi Hotel, Liverpool, May 14-16 - will showcase the best in community recycling, with speakers from as far afield as Minnesota, USA, Alberta and Belgium as well as the leading lights of sustainable waste management in this country.
Leading environmental consultant Dr Dominic Hogg will be discussing source separation as the way forward for kerbside collections. Susan Hubbard of Eureka Recycling from the USA will be telling delegates about running the largest not-for-profit kerbside recycler in the States.
Waste management solutions, balancing the environmental, economic and social imperatives will come under the spotlight for Andy Bond and Andy Cunningham, who help run two of the most successful community recycling operations in the UK - ECT Recycling and Avon Friends of the Earth.
Adding to the international flavour guest speakers from Philadelphia and Alberta will be giving their perspectives on local government and community waste management solutions.
Social enterprise, addressing disadvantage and tonnage, and funding opportunities for 2003 are other topics lined up for discussion.
