PRESS RELEASE

22/3/2002

CRN/AN/PR25                                                            To be released immediately

CRN MEMBERS HIT RECORD 1.5m KERBSIDE COLLECTIONS

The Community Recycling Network’s (CRN) members now offer separated kerbside collections for more than 1.5 million households – six per cent of the UK population.

This significant statistic represents a 50 per cent rise on the number of households benefiting from the CRN members’ collection schemes two years ago. In May 2000 the CRN released figures which showed just over one million households had regular collections.

The CRN is collectively the largest single operator of householder-separated collections in the UK. The figures refer to recyclable waste that is separated by the householder prior to collection from the kerbside.

“The community sector is growing exponentially,” says CRN coordinator Andy Moore. “This figure goes to show that we must be doing something right.

“We’re also keen to help local authorities meet their targets and to deliver on the UK’s national waste strategies.”
