"Rotters" operate a kerbside collection of green waste in Barnard Castle in 2004 rolling out into Teesdale district by 2006. We collect, receive and recycle green domestic waste into compost and timber into charcoal, but for larger bits of wood we cut these into usable timber products. All products being distributed locally, with some products sold on site. This project is an extension of our training for long-term unemployed and regeneration in Teesdale, where we provide opportunities within an organic garden, tree planting and other conservation projects. We have make our operations energy efficient using electric milk floats, powered through wind turbines aim to develop alternative methods for energy provision for the centre such as for heating.
The Teesside Conservation Volunteers are also exploring the potential to set up a research and teaching EcoCentre with the aim to build this in the spring of 2006 and provide open construction workshops.

The Seymour Trust was formed to enable the community to recycle its waste materials in a proper and responsible manner. We have a variety of projects:

  • The Wasted Worm Project sets out to promote Global Worming using a surprisingly simple way of dealing with kitchen waste.
  • Romanway Recycling Village proposes to reclaim a contaminated Brownfield site located at Romanway, Bishop Auckland, to allow the development of a Recycling Village which will house new businesses trading as “Social Enterprises” created to produce ‘green’ products
  • Heritage Fishing in North Yorkshire provides low cost, organic, healthy eating for members of the community by utilising & protecting North Sea fish stocks. Trading as a non-profit social enterprise under the constitution of the Trust, it aims to preserve a way of life and provides sustainability for local people
  • Soils for Salmon is aiming to promote Best Management Practices for protecting native soil and vegetation where possible, and especially for restoring soil functions on disturbed sites through the incorporation of certificated organic amendments and mulches. Over the years, our loose-knit volunteer Soils for Salmon team, have worked with policy makers, planners, design professionals, regulators and builders. We are aiming to develop the basic awareness that "soil is alive, and soil life matters," so that we can help restore soil life and its essential functions by amending damaged soils with compost, and that soil protection and restoration are essential to restoring streams and salmon habitats.
