SHELVE opens its doors

Owton Fens Community Association has launched its Sustainable Hartlepool End of Life Vehicle Enterprise (SHELVE) Project.

The SHELVE Project is a sustainable community enterprise established to recover and recycle up to 95 per cent of end of life vehicles. The aim of the project is to reduce landfill waste in the area by reusing and recycling materials where possible.

Established in 1985, Owton Fens Community Association promotes and develops opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged areas in Hartlepool. The SHELVE project has been awarded a Big Lottery Fund grant of £194,639 as part of the CRED Programme, which aims to develop and expand waste recycling, reuse and composting projects. The funds from this grant have been put towards premises, equipment and staff costs for the project.

Allan McPartlin, SHELVE Project Manager, said: "We have put a lot of time and effort developing our SHELVE project and are pleased that we can now officially launch it and offer the residents of Hartlepool a valuable service whilst also helping the local environment."
