All New Packaging Programme

The Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) and the Sheet Plant Association (SPA) will be cooperating in a new programme looking at the corrugated cardboard industry.

The programme aims to raise awareness of the benefits of corrugated cardboard as a packaging material. Deriving from a sustainable resource and with a recycling rate of 84 per cent in the UK, corrugated packaging is a highly environmentally friendly material. It can also be deposited of in a number of ways, including home composting if recycling facilities are not available.

The CPI Corrugated Sector is linked with a range of national and independent manufacturers and converters, while the SPA is an association for independent sheet plants. Together, they represent over 90 per cent of the UK industry. Andrew Barnetson, Corrugated Sector Manager at the CPI, said: "Corrugated packaging is the UK's favourite packaging material. Its benefits go far beyond the environment when you recognise the combination of simplicity, flexibility and fitness for purpose."

Graham Sutherland, Chairman of SPA, added: "It is very important to us that all customers and consumers appreciate the benefits of this unique material."

The programme plans to announce a number of new initiatives over the summer.
