CIWM's 21st Conference

The Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM), a not for profit organisation, is holding its 21st annual conference and exhibition in Paignton in June.

This year's event, 12 -15   June, promises to be the largest ever, with over 350 exhibitors presenting new technologies and close to 100 speakers from both government and industry. Issues of climate change, waste management and resource use affecting both international and UK practice are to be discussed.

A number of free seminars will be held on 13 June, focusing on transport and environmental issues, while live demonstrations areas will allow visitors to see how new equipment works. Delegates will have the opportunity to learn from the experiences of other local authorities, receiving advice on establishing new schemes, increasing up take and enlisting the support of the community. They will also be updated on legislation and health and safety requirements, with the aim of developing new and innovative ways of working.

Seminars will include presentations from Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, Rushcliffe Borough Council, Lichfield District Council, Suffolk Waste Partnership Manager, RECAP (Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Waste Partnership and Suffolk Waste Partnership) and London Borough of Sutton. Seven councils from The Beacon Scheme will also be presenting seminars this year, using case studies to illustrate how they have been visionary in their approach to waste management.

Deputy Chief Executive of CIWM, Chris Murphy, said of the line up to this year's event: "There will be a vast array of internal and external exhibition space covering all areas of waste, from trucks and the latest planting equipment to opportunities to speak to specific consultants and niche markets."

With local MP and Environment Minister Ben Bradshaw speaking, plus the Waste Strategy Review for England scheduled for release this month, the event is set to cover a wide variety of issues.
