Fonebak leads the way in meeting WEEE legislation
The future is bright for mobile phone recycling, thanks to Essex-based recycling company Fonebak. The organisation collects old and unwanted mobile phones and either refurbishes and sends them on to third world countries or recycles them, in strict accordance with the new WEEE guidelines, which came into force on 1 July.
Fonebak have recently been granted licences by the Environment Agency and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to operate a Producer Compliance Scheme, an Approved Authorised Treatment Facility, a Designated Collection Facility and to act as an Approved Importer. The mobile phone sector will now lead the way in meeting WEEE standards, as Ruben Peijnenborgh, Managing Director of Fonebak describes: "We are the only company in the UK to hold licences for the four key aspects of WEEE...the company offers a total turn-key solution -from collection, to treatment, re-use and recycling all in full compliance with the WEEE legislation." Phone users can deposit their unwanted phones at any mobile phone retail outlet and be certain they will be reused or disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way.
On average, the company processes over 250,000 handsets per month, with approximately 80% refurbished and sent to developing countries, and the other 20% sent for safe recycling, with a zero landfill policy. With an estimated 18 million mobile phones replaced every year in Britain and approximately 90 million currently unused, Fonebak can make a real impact on the future for mobile phone waste.
