Community Recycling Leader Retires
Tony Cassidy, the General Manager of Alloa Community Enterprises (ACE) has stepped down after 23 years at the helm of the company, based in Clackmannanshire.
He was the first employee of the company in 1984, when ACE was focused on providing low cost furniture to disadvantaged people. The organisation has since grown into one of Scotland's foremost recycling companies, employing 30 people and delivering recycling services for glass, paper, cardboard and cans across four local authority areas in central Scotland.
In 2001 - the year ACE were awarded the UK's Best Community Recycling Award -Tony Cassidy was instrumental in establishing the multi-material kerbside collection that plays a pivotal role in making Clackmannanshire the best performing council in Scotland, with a recycling rate in excess of 40 per cent.. He was also a key player in the formation of the Community Recycling Network for Scotland in 2002. CRNS's Network Director, Iain Gulland, said: "Tony has been the driving force behind the success of ACE ... [he] has also gone abroad to learn from others and see what can be replicated here in Scotland ... I know that Tony's work at ACE has inspired others in our sector to develop their own local initiatives."
