New rules have been set by the European Commission surrounding the export of waste for recycling. The new legislation, which comes into force on 12 July will effect the export of 'green list' waste. This includes recyclables like paper, cardboard, and some types of plastics and metal. Currently, many types of low hazard waste can be exported to countries that want them for recycling. Following the changes, businesses will need to check if their waste for export complies with specific requirements and whether it must be notified to the relevant authorities for permission. Head of Waste for the Environment Agency, Liz Parkes explained: " Millions of tonnes of recyclable materials are shipped overseas every year and what many people may not realise is there a legitimate and growing trade for these types of waste which are viewed as valuable resources in many countries. From July 12 it will be the responsibility of recyclable waste exporters to check that the country they are exporting to is happy to receive the recyclable waste and if so, under what conditions." Liz Parkes added: "Getting these new processes right means we can focus our efforts on pursuing those who have no regard for the law and try to export mixed, poor quality waste on to countries that don't want it."
