No plans for rising costs
According to new research, a majority of Welsh companies expect to see a rise in raw material costs for the next year, but have no plans to reduce their usage.
In a survey conducted by Envirowise, the sustainable business service, 60 per cent of companies from various sectors in the country thought that the cost of sourcing raw materials were going to rise and 37 per cent said that it was their biggest expenditure. However, as little as 2 per cent of companies stated that they had implemented any plans to improve the efficiency of their usage.
“The results of this research are startling” says Ed Gmitrowicz, Envirowise Programme Area Manager for Wales. “They suggest the majority of businesses in Wales simply do not know where to start when it comes to reducing the amount of raw materials they use, even though doing so could cut costs and increase profit.”
Envirowise are hoping to encourage companies across Wales to deal with the issue by instigating a ‘cleaner design’ approach to their practices in order to minimise waste and increase profit.
“It encourages businesses to reduce packaging and waste and to work with customers and suppliers, resulting in substantial benefits to the environment, as well as the bottom line.”
