Sustainable markets
Covent Garden Market is looking to produce zero waste through a support programme provided by Enhance.
Following a survey of market businesses about their views on waste produced at the site, Covent Garden Market Authority (CGMA) is looking to improve their recycling facilities in order to create a sustainable business practice. The market currently recycles 29 per cent of its waste, a lot of which is packaging, however a high percentage of the waste is organic, represented by the 340 types of fruit and vegetables on sale.
“There are 250 companies based at New Covent Garden Market, employing over 2,500 people” said Jan Lloyd, Chief Executive at CGMA. “We saw an opportunity to recycle more, particularly of our organic waste, which is the largest proportion.”
The Enhance program is a support service for environmental enterprises in London and is funded by the London Development Agency and delivered by London Remade and the London Community Recycling Network. Kate Nelson, Senior Project Manager, London Remade, said: “New Covent Garden Market is the UK’s largest horticultural market and has a large concentration of catering distributors. We hope to help make New Covent Garden the most sustainable market in the UK.”
