New technology for less packaging
Trials of a new technology for salad and fresh produce packaging have shown that manufacturers could reduce packaging volume by 25 per cent.
International Food Partners (IFP), in conjunction with Ceetak Ltd, have created a new Integrity SealTM technology, which rapidly heats and cools flow-wrapped bags used on produce such as salads and confectionery. The amount of packaging needed in the process is less than conventional crimped bags and also creates a stronger seal, increasing the shelf life of the product.
WRAP trialled the technology along with a thinner gauge film on salad packaging and found that the required packaging was reduced by a quarter.
Marks & Spencer recently trialled the Integrity SealTM technology and have begun using it on several of their products. Suppliers to ASDA stores have also announced plans to trial the technology.
Andrew Parry, WRAP project manager said: “The continuing work to develop this technology is proof that packaging optimisation can deliver packaging savings and, by enabling shelf life extension, potentially reduce food waste.”
