Money for your mobile
T-Mobile is offering phone users the chance to send in their old mobile phones for recycling, in exchange for cash.
Anyone can send in their phone, irrespective of the network and receive up to £80 for themselves or a chosen charity. Phones are either broken down and recycled or reset and sold again. The offer is in conjunction with Fonebak, an international company who provide recycling and re-use services for mobile phone retailers, operators and corporations.
It is estimated that in the UK, 15 million mobile phones are replaced each year, leading to 1500 tonnes of landfill waste. The value of these discarded handsets is said to be worth up to £1 billion.
At the launch of the scheme, Adam Vaughan, editor of NewConsumer.com said: “It’s crazy to think that so many people have old mobile phones lying around collecting dust. Over 13% of people aged 24-35 have at least three of them somewhere in their homes. These phones can be earning money by sending them to be recycled or put to good use in emerging markets.”
