Confusion over biodegradable materials
Consumers are unsure about the environmental benefits of new biopolymer plastics used in packaging.
According to research conducted by WRAP, householders said they were confused about the difference between ‘biodegradable,’ ‘degradable’ and ‘compostable’ and ‘home compostable’ materials being used in packaging such as bin liners and films. The survey of 400 consumers throughout the UK revealed a high percentage who thought that biodegradable and compostable plastics were the most environmentally friendly. But after learning about the potential impact that these plastics can have when sent to landfill or compost, consumers were more uncertain about the benefits.
“There is a lot of confusion about compostable packaging and biopolymers, both amongst consumers and in industry,” said WRAP executive director Philip Ward. “Some of these new materials do have great potential, but it is vital that they are introduced carefully, with the correct infrastructure in place, so that they can be dealt with properly once they have been used.”
WRAP is to produce a statement for retailers detailing what should be taken into account when using biopolymer packaging. They are also working with the Composting Association to provide certification for ‘home compostable’ packaging and guidelines on what such claims mean.
