Kappa rejoins paper alliance
The world’s largest fibre-based packaging company has rejoined Paperchain in a gesture of support for the UK’s Campaign for Real Recycling.
Smurfit Kappa Recycling, the jointly-owned company of Jefferson Smurfit and Kappa Packaging, provides sustainable waste solutions for UK companies and organisations and is the biggest user of packaging-grade recovered fibre in Europe. The company renewed their membership with Paperchain in August and the trade group now represents over 82 per cent of the UK recovered fibre market.
Simon Weston, managing director Smurfit Kappa Recycling, said: "Collecting high quality materials close to home and then reprocessing them at UK mills is clearly in the best interests of society, the environment and UK industry. This is why we wholeheartedly support PaperChain and its involvement with the Campaign for Real Recycling."
The campaign is calling to government for action to improve the standards of UK collections and recycled material. At present, many local authorities are offering co-mingled collections for residents in a bid to improve recycling rates. However, this can result in contaminated materials, which are often unable to be reprocessed.
