Wales looks at new recycling rates

Future targets for recycling and composting in Wales have been discussed in order to meet EU landfill targets.
Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing Jane Davidson, met with the Welsh Assembly Government and local authority executives to look at ways of meeting waste targets set out in the Landfill Directive. One of the options discussed was for local authorities to recycle 70 per cent of municipal waste by 2025.
Wales already have targets up until 2020 in order to meet the Landfill Directive, but this new target would help to ensure this.
The meeting was the first in a series of discussions, which will look at issues such as funding, technology and how the government could support local authorities in achieving this target.
The Minister commented: “We have to look at a harder focus for our targets in the future to combat climate change…and meet the EU directive targets. It is crucial that the Assembly Government and local authorities are working to the same agenda and have the same ambitions to recycle more.”
