WRAP counts the benefits
A projection of figures for recycled materials in the UK was revealed by WRAP at their annual Open meeting.
The organisation estimated that 86 million tonnes of material would be recycled and 12.5 million tonnes of CO2 will be saved as a result infrastructure it has helped to develop. The figures were based on a prediction of the working life of equipment and machinery involved in recycling processes. WRAP also estimated that through various developments that they have enabled in the recycling industry, an estimated 5.8 million tonnes of extra recycling capacity have been created each year.
The figures came as part of WRAP’s review of its achievements over the past year. This includes signing up nine new organisations to the Courtauld Commitment and establishing an agreement with the Olympic Delivery Authority for the use of recycled materials in the construction of Olympic venues in London. WRAP Chief Executive Dr Liz Goodwin said at the meeting: “I want the public and businesses to make the connection between actions they can take to reduce and recycle and the contribution this makes to resource efficiency and climate change. WRAP has an important role in this; working with all parts of the resource efficiency loop to make it as easy, efficient and economically sustainable as possible for everyone to prevent waste and to recycle more.”
