Increase for Scottish sustainable aggregate

A new report published by WRAP indicates that the market for recycled aggregate in Scotland is set to grow.
In a study entitled, The Sustainable Use of Resources for the Production of Aggregates in Scotland, WRAP predicted a 1.17 per cent rise in demand for aggregate until 2018, with recycled and secondary aggregate taking 20 per cent of the market share by 2012. Recycled aggregate refers to that sourced from waste materials produced in construction, whereas secondary aggregate is a product of natural or manufactured sources including china clay, sand and pulverised fuel ash.
The report projected a forecast for these aggregate markets based on several determining factors such as, price changes, supply availability and the market share for primary aggregate. As a result, the report predicted that by 2018, recycled aggregate would achieve a 15 per cent market share for asphalt surfacing and a 13 per cent share in concrete application. This is compared to just 5 per cent and 3 per cent respectively in 2003.

John Barritt, Technical Adviser for Aggregates at WRAP said: “It’s an important aspect of promoting more sustainable construction methods that the use of recycled and secondary aggregates is optimised across all aggregate applications. The forecast that sustainable aggregates are expected to achieve a 20 per cent market share by 2012 is therefore particularly encouraging.”
