Solution to recycling storage is a success
A pilot scheme of a new insert for wheeled recycling bins has resulted in a delivery to over 100,000 homes in Bradford.
The Inner Caddy, manufactured by Straight plc, is a collection box that can be inserted in to a wheeled bin and used to separate recyclables. Waste materials such as paper can be stored in the bin, while the Caddy slots in the top. This can then be used for bulkier materials such as glass and plastic and dividers can be used to further separate waste streams.
The Inner Caddy was previously trialled in summer 2006 as part of a drive by Bradford Metropolitan District Council (MDC) to expand their recycling services. Residents had found that they had too many bins in order to separate their recycling and the Inner Caddy was piloted as a way to save on storage and kerbside space while also preventing contamination of separate materials.
Bradford MDC delivered the Inner Caddy to 30,000 homes and following a successful pilot, a further 90,000 households will receive the unit this year.
Since the trials, Bradford MDC have reported a 4 per cent increase in recycling rates.
Cllr Anne Hawkesworth, Executive Member for Environment at Bradford MDC, said: "The insert scheme has been a great success. The Council is already reaping the rewards, seeing a boost to the recycling rate since the inserts were introduced and a reduction in the amount of household rubbish going into the dustbin.” |
