Solihull's Gummy Bin Success

Solihull's chewing gum reduction scheme has topped DEFRA's latest chewing gum trials.

Using the Gummy Bin chewing gum disposal and recycling system, Solihull found gum litter reduced by 72 percent over a six month period in 2006, almost double the average reduction of 37 percent across the 15 local authorities taking part.

Funding from the Chewing Gum Action Group provided local authorities additional support for their campaigns, which included harsher penalties for gum litter, participation with youth and community groups and alternative ways to dispose of gum, as with Solihull's Gummy Bins scheme.

Established in 2005, the Gummy Bins company produces the world's only chewing gum disposal and recycling system.   Customers currently include over 20 local councils.   David Bell, Solihull's Cabinet Member for Safer and Stronger Communities commented: "Gummy Bins are a great way to encourage people to dispose of their gum responsibly, and are one of the reasons why Solihull's campaign had such a positive impact."

DEFRA's 2007 trials will run for a four week period in August or September this year, with all English local authorities welcome to apply.   Further information at: www.defra.gov.uk/environment/localenv/gum/actiongroup/index.htm
