Composting Protocol Published
The Composting Association has welcomed the publication of the new Quality Protocol for Compost.
The guidelines in the protocol establish a clear set of criteria for compost production that firmly sets out at what point compost makes the transition from 'waste' to 'product', and the point at which it is no longer subject to waste management regulations.
Drawn up by the Environment Agency and WRAP in partnership with the Composting Association, the protocol is the result of several years work. The industry's current standard for the production of compost production, BPI PAS 100 and its PAS 100 certification scheme, will be upgraded to meet the additional requirements of the protocol.
Chief Executive of the Composting Association, Dr. Jane Gilbert, said: "We are delighted that this protocol has finally been realised. This is an important issue for our members and we have been lobbying for this for many years. Now that the status of compost as a product has been defined, producers will be able to move forward, confident in the knowledge that they have created a safe product which has met a rigorous set of criteria."
