SOFA Project royal visit

HRH Princess Royal visited REVAMP, the Waste, Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) re-use and recycling subsidiary of the SOFA Project, on 13 November to show her support for the scheme. She met members of staff and witnessed repairs and safety testing in the Domestic Appliance Workshop.

Under the WEEE 2003 Directive, local authorities and businesses are obligated to recycle their electrical and electronic equipment. REVAMP provides assistance in doing so. At their depot in Bristol, workers sort electrical items, such as fridges, freezers, cookers and microwaves, sourced from local businesses, donors, organisations like DIXONS and manufacturers like Baumatic. These items can be sold in the SOFA Project shop or sent for dismantling and recycling.

Julian Williams, the Project's director, hopes that this Royal visit will increase REVAMP's profile: "We hope to continue bridging relationships with local businesses to divert unwanted electronic waste at the same time as providing the community with working, affordable domestic appliance solutions."
