PaperChain supports 'Recycle Week'
PaperChain has renewed its support for 'Recycle Week 2008'. The event, which will run from 2-8 June 2008, is organised by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) in partnership with leading materials recycling organisations. Its aim is to engage the public's imagination in effective recycling opportunities.
PaperChain is an organisation that campaigns for recycling action in the paper industry. It is sponsored by the Papermaking Sector Members of the Confederation of Paper Industries. PaperChain Members used around 3.5 million tonnes of recovered paper and board in 2006, representing 82 per cent of recovered paper and board used in the UK, and 43 per cent of recovered paper and board collected from the UK waste stream.
The organisation publicly withdrew support for Recycle Week earlier in the year, over concerns about the increased use of co-mingled recycling collections. PaperChain argues that such collections generate overly contaminated material that reduces the quality of recycled paper. However, Martin Green, PaperChain Chairman, said that they have chosen to renew their commitment to Recycle Week in order to "ensure that appropriate information is conveyed to the public and Local Authority service providers" about proper paper recycling.
