Honours for environmental services
The 2008 New Year Honours List has been announced. Many of those on the list have been awarded for their contributions to environmental conservation in the UK.
Several people at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) were included in the honours list: Robert Farmer, Head Of Contingency Planning (OBE); Callton Young, Director of Sustainability and Competitiveness, Food and Drink Federation (OBE); Gillian Cheeseman, Administration Manager, Central Science Laboratory (MBE).
George Thornton also receives an OBE. He is Chair of the Lake District National Park Authority, a local government body dedicated to conserving and enhancing the Lake District's natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. Gillian Drummond, DL, has also been awarded an OBE. She is President of the Association Of Garden Trusts, which has been working to encourage local authorities to save gardens from unnecessary development.
On the MBE list is Simon Rennie. He is Chief Executive of the Central Scotland Forest Trust, which is responsible for planting 34,000 hectares of trees. The following people were also awarded MBEs for services to nature and conservation in specific parts of the UK: Dr Mary Gillham, life-long naturalism researcher, for services in South Wales; Nancy McIntyre, manager of Juniper Nursery in Falkirk, for services in Scotland; Lisbeth Thoms, for services in Scotland; James Robert White, for services in Dorset.
