Christmas card recycling campaign

A collection target of 100 million cards has been set by Recycle Now and the Woodland Trust in their annual Christmas card recycling scheme. Reaching this target would save 2,600 tonnes of CO2 equivalent greenhouse gases, which is the same as taking over 800 cars off the road for a year.

The campaign was launched on 3 January by I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! star, Anna Ryder Richardson. Christmas cards can be recycled throughout January at a range of high street stores in the UK, including WHSmith, Tesco (including selected Express), TK Maxx and all Marks & Spencer stores (including selected M&S Simply Food stores).

All the cards collected during the campaign are taken to paper mills, where they are recycled into brand new paper products. If targets are met, the money raised will allow the Woodland Trust to plant 24,000 trees.

Sue Holden, Chief Executive of the Woodland Trust, says: "The UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe - just 12% of the UK is covered by woods, compared to the European average of 44%. By recycling your cards, you can help us plant thousands more throughout the UK."
