Lowest residual waste

WyeCycle, a community recycling organisation operating in two Kent villages, has calculated that the people of Wye and Brook throw out the least amount of residual waste in the country.

As part of a behavioural change project, funded by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and Kent County Council, WyeCycle carried out two 'waste audits' last year. These audits involved collecting bin bags from a random cross-section of the community, separating the waste into a number of categories (plastics, metals, glass, food, etc.) and weighing the resulting collections. This enabled them to see how much recyclable waste was being sent to landfill.

In Wye and Brook, the average weight of residual waste per household per year was found to be 262kg. When, in 2006, Defra looked at residual waste from the ten best performing local authorities in the country, the average weight for this waste came in at 471kg per household per year. This means that 'the best of the rest' send nearly twice as much residual waste to landfill as Wye and Brook.
