Love Food Groups
As part of a campaign to reduce waste, the National Federation of Women's Institutes (NFWI) has announced the launch of Love Food Groups.
'Love Food Hate Waste' (LFHW) is a campaign by the Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to reduce food waste. In support of LFHW, members of the NFWI would like to share knowledge of food waste prevention with others in their communities. There will be 14 of these Love Food Groups, spread across the country. They are open to anyone and will involve between six and eight participants. The Groups will meet once a month for about four months to discuss ways of reducing food waste through proper food storage, portion sizing and appropriate measuring.
WRAP's research shows that one shopping bag full of food gets thrown away for every three bought. Reducing food waste not only saves money but also helps to reduce climate change. Production, transporting and storing food uses a lot of energy, water and packaging, which is wasted if the food is thrown away uneaten. If sent to landfill, food gives off methane, a damaging greenhouse gas. By contrast, if food wastage was stopped, it is estimated that it would save 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. That's equivalent to taking one in five cars off our roads!
Fay Mansell, Chair of the NFWI, said: "The Love Food Groups will help make reducing food waste fun, easy and effective." WRAP Project Manager, Julia Falcon, added: "It is really important to work together with local communities and to learn from them about what works best in their homes." |
