Barney aims for 40 per cent
Barnet Council has forged a new five-year partnership with ECT Recycling, setting a target of recycling 40 per cent of its waste by 2010.
ECT Recycling is one of the UK’s leading social enterprises and the largest provider of community recycling services. It has provided a recycling service to Barnet since 2001. The new contract will involve the addition of plastic bottles and cardboard to the kerbside collection scheme. ECT already collects paper, glass, tins and cans, aluminum foil, shoes, mobile phones, textiles, engine oil and batteries from Barnet homes. As part of the new scheme, ECT also intends to create a baling facility for cans, plastic bottles and cardboard. The majority of materials that ECT collects are recycled in the UK, which reduces carbon emissions produced by transport.
In the last year, Barnet’s rate of recycling has reached 30 per cent. However, they hope to boost it even further. In addition to the 40 per cent (by 2010) target, they hope to reach 45 per cent recycling by 2014.
Andy Bond, Managing Director of ECT, commented: “We are delighted to be able to extend our partnership with Barnet and look forward to working with them over the next five years, to make it easier for residents to recycle even more and helping boost recycling rates in the borough.”
