Every little helps!

Tesco has been recognised for the work done by its environmental programme to reduce its carbon footprint: the supermarket retailer received the Barclays Environmental Leadership Award at the 2008 Business in the Community Awards for Excellence.

In 2006, as part of its Community Plan, Tesco announced a series of long-term targets that it hoped would help to reduce its overall environmental impact. One of its aims was to minimise its carbon footprint and it made headway in this regard last year by expending a fifth less carbon in building new stores than in 2006. Additionally, Tesco has devoted £86 million to low-carbon technology and has established the Sustainable Consumption Institute at the University of Manchester to examine sustainability in the retail sector.

Gary Hoffman, Group Vice Chairman of Barclays, who judged the Barclays Environmental Leadership Award, commented: " Having first put its own house in order and seen great financial savings as a result, Tesco is now on a quest to show customers that every little helps when it comes to the environment. Instead of being overwhelmed by the challenge, Tesco is using its size and influence in the marketplace to improve environmental impact on a huge scale."
