Capitalism as if the World Matters
Making the environment a capitalist issue: is this the answer to all our problems? In this clearly and persuasively written book, filled with case studies and statistics, Jonathon Porritt says that environmental issues are being argued from a doom and gloom perspective and that we need to effectively repackage sustainability so that it is seen as a positive rather than a negative concept.
He argues that our consumer driven society will only respond on mass to something that will enrich our lives. So we need to stop fighting capitalism and instead work with it and we will see the changes that we desperately need. Porritt believes that this combination will improve the free market economy and make it more about local produce and intelligent spending rather than mindless impulse buying in pursuit of happiness - in the process create a society where we get more satisfaction from our purchases once we see them as part of a wider good.
As ex-chair of the Green Party, one-time Director of Friends of the Earth, and co-founder and Director of Forum for the Future, Porritt is possibly the best person to write a book such as this. The reader can feel confident that his views are based on a desire to create a sustainable future rather than less laudable reasons - an important factor when dealing with such a revolutionary book.
